D'Amato May Lobby For Poker Industry

"Former Sen. Alfonse D'Amato may soon be lobbying on behalf of the online poker industry.

D'Amato, a famously avid poker player, is in talks with the Poker Players Alliance about becoming the group's lobbyist and spokesman, said Michael Bolcerak, president of the San Francisco-based group.

Word of D'Amato taking on the online poker lobby first surfaced online at pokerhelper.com, though Bolcerak said there is no deal yet. He said D'Amato is one of "a few" people who are being considered for the role. Bolcerak said his group has 140,000 members in the United States.

During his three terms representing New York in the U.S. Senate, D'Amato hosted a regular Thursday night poker game at his office.

D'Amato's Park Strategies firm was retained by 16 organizations in 2006, according to the Center for Responsive Politics. D'Amato's assistant did not return phone calls Thursday."

"The Board today confirms that the Group has voluntarily ceased processing funds transfers between NETELLER e-wallets and online gambling merchants on behalf of US residents. This decision represents the culmination of a series of deliberations over recent months by the Board which, in light of impending regulations related to the Act, believed that NETELLER's position in the US market was no longer sustainable. Since the passing of the Act, the Company has been working diligently on a programme of operational and technical planning measures and procedures to allow implementation of any such decision at the earliest opportunity. NETELLER has committed to an orderly withdrawal for the benefit of its customers and will endeavour to maintain a high degree of service throughout the process.

With immediate effect, as of today Thursday 18 January 2007, at 12:01AM GMT, US resident customers were no longer able to transfer funds using their NETELLER e-wallets to or from any online gambling site.

In line with the Group's standard business practices for all customers, the funds of US resident customers are held in segregated trust accounts and are fully secure and will be available for withdrawal by customers, on demand. The ability to withdraw funds will exist regardless of the customer's location or ability to transfer to any site. All US resident customers will continue to be able to use their NETELLER e-wallet accounts to safely transfer funds to and from non-gambling merchants and are not required to close their accounts or withdraw their funds.

NETELLER customers not resident in the US are not affected at all by this withdrawal from the US market. The Group will continue to operate its non-US business as normal, maintaining existing customer and merchant support across all the markets it currently serves.

In order to be able to support this US withdrawal, NETELLER has dedicated the last few months to developing product enhancements to its software platform in order to be able to block automatically transfers to online gambling merchants from US residents. These features are now fully deployed and integrated into the Group's core platform.

Today's updated position with respect to the US market leaves the Group able to focus on its continuing business and the opportunities available in the growing markets of Europe, Asia and the Americas outside of the United States. NETELLER remains focused on developing its business in line with its stated strategic objectives, including geographical and product diversification for all markets. The Group will continue to launch localised services within the global market and a number of new product launches are scheduled for early this year."

"President Bush signed into law a ban on online wagering, impacting 23 million Americans who enjoy the game of poker on the Internet.

By including this legislation in the SAFE Port Act, Congress and the President bluffed the American people who overwhelmingly oppose federal efforts to ban online poker.

"Today is a dark day for the great American game of poker," said Michael Bolcerek, president of the Poker Players Alliance, a grassroots advocacy organization of more than 110,000 poker enthusiasts. "Twenty-three million Americans who play the game online will effectively be denied the ability to enjoy this popular form of entertainment, even in the privacy of their own homes."
Bolcerek added, "Congress had a real opportunity to create good public policy by licensing, regulating and taxing Internet poker. Yet, they chose prohibition. This decision will prove to be detrimental in the long-run and leaves more than $4 billion in annual tax revenue on the table."

In late September, in a move of political gamesmanship, leaders of the U.S. House and Senate hi-jacked the vital port security bill and added the Internet gambling prohibition language.

Living poker legend Doyle Brunson said, "As a lifelong poker player, I can't believe the underhanded way this new bill restricting online poker was passed through Congress. What does Internet poker have to do with the Safe Port Bill? We Texans don't like this kind of trickery. Texas is a state where you can see an enemy coming, a friend is a friend, and you look someone straight in the eyes."

The legislation contains specific exemptions for Internet wagers on horse racing, state lotteries and fantasy sports. The PPA hopes that Congress will evaluate objectively the skill game of poker and afford it similar treatment.

"Internet poker is a great source of enjoyment and allows me to compete on an equal playing field with people from around the world," said Ethan Ruby, an amateur poker player who was paralyzed in a traffic accident five years ago. "I can't understand how President Bush would take this game away from me and millions of other Americans."" (CNN)
